All of which means Book of Shadows (a title which is never explained in the film, by the way) is a very, very different animal than The Blair Witch Project.Īs the first film was a verite account of kids stalked in the woods by unknown (and presumably supernatural forces) ¿ shot on home video and presented as if it were a ¿real¿ home video, this film is a fully-realized horror movie built around the mythos of the original. So much so that characters in Book of Shadows refer the first film by name, references are made to the film¿s release and controversial nature, we even see snippets of discussions about the original movie from television personalities like Conan O❻rien & Andy Richter, Jay Leno, and film critic Roger Ebert). Instead, home video (and video technology in general) play a critical role in Book of Shadows, but the movie should be seen as a sequel to the Blair Witch phenomenon rather than a continuation the movie itself. Part of the film¿s appeal comes from a savvy decision not to follow the first film¿s ¿this is a real home video¿ format. In fact, for a project which should never have been made, it wasn¿t half-bad (sadly, I rather doubt this sound-bite/compliment will show-up as a critic¿s quote in print or television ads). Nonetheless, despite all the bad publicity I had heard about Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 (early buzz on the film had clearly showed disdain for the project)¿despite my own assumption BOS:BW2 would probably suck because it didn¿t have a right to exist in the first place (how do you sequelize a film as unique as The Blair Witch Project?)¿I ended-up not hating Book of Shadows. This is the kind of review critics (and I apply the term to myself loosely) hate to write: a review which goes against the grain of popular sentiment, and tries to defend a movie for which preview audiences seem to be allowing no defense. As they come closer and closer to succeeding, members of Jeff's party begin turning-up dead ¿ as the videos begin to reveal a horrific truth about what happened to Jeff's group during their forgotten hours outside of Burkittsville. In an effort to reclaim their missing time, Jeff & Company utilize high-technology to retrieve the missing time from their video tape. Concurrently, the horribly mutilated bodies of a second tour group turn-up not too far from where Jeff's party camped ¿ the eyes of the community suspect Jeff and his group. They wake up the next morning, quickly realizing none of them remember falling asleep the night before.Ī quick survey of video cameras left running overnight reveal several hours of "missing time" ¿ time which isn't visible on the videocassettes, time that none of them remember. One group, led by Jeff (Jeffrey Donovan), camps overnight in the hills above of Burkitsville. Numerous groups of Blair Witch followers are taken on guided tours of the locations featured in the flick. One year after The Blair Witch Project is released in theaters, the film has become a cultural phenomenon.įans of the movie sweep over the small town of Burkittsville, Maryland, in an effort to visit locations featured in the film.
